• Hoss Intropia and IbizaPreservation continue their partnership to protect the Mediterranean Sea

Hoss Intropia is once again collaborating with the IbizaPreservation foundation in its mission to conserve and regenerate the natural wealth of the Mediterranean Sea. An alliance that stems from the firm’s deep bond with this unique environment, the source of inspiration and essence of each of its collections. To this end, the POSIDONIA solidarity necklace has been designed, made with a print exclusive to the brand’s collection. 100% of the profits from the sale of this product and 1% of each purchase made during the month of August will be used to conserve and regenerate the Posidonia in the marine ecosystem of Ibiza and Formentera.

This plant is among the longest-living organisms on Earth, with a meadow that stretches from the area of Es Freus (Formentera) to the beach of Ses Salines (Ibiza) estimated to be between 80,000 and 100,000 years old. Moreover, it releases oxygen at exceptional levels, producing up to 20 litres of oxygen per square metre daily. This is why it is known as ‘the lungs of the Mediterranean’.

The Posidonia oceanica meadows surrounding these two islands constitute one of the largest and best-preserved marine plant ecosystems in the Mediterranean, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

With the Ode to the Mediterranean project, more than 80,000 m2 of Posidonia meadows have already been protected. IbizaPreservation’s executive director Inma Saranova explains: “Every action counts to ensure the future of this valuable ecosystem. Posidonia oceanica is not just a marine plant, it is a real ecological jewel. Its meadows, as well as acting as carbon sinks – absorbing 15 times more CO2 than the Amazon rainforest – also provide essential habitat for numerous marine species and help protect coasts from erosion. So we must act now to protect this Mediterranean lung, which is facing a combination of threats such as indiscriminate anchoring of boats, marine pollution and rising water temperatures.

The funds raised will continue, for the fifth consecutive year, to protect this universal asset that has an essential ecological value in providing refuge for a wide variety of marine species, contributing significantly to the production of oxygen in the Mediterranean Sea, helping to stabilise the seabed, protecting the Mediterranean coastline and facilitating the uptake and storage of nutrients, acting as a carbon dioxide sink and as an ally against climate change.
